Mexico Real Estate, living, retiring and investing
Dec 14th, 2009 by admin

Mexico real estate has been doing very well over the years, when I came here 8 years ago, life was slower and it was 3rd world but today we have millions of Americans Canadians and Europeans looking for a place to life quietly and inexpensively and they now number in the 7 million range and increasing quickly.

It is still possible to have a new home under $150k and live a slower lifestyle with the gentle Mexicn people and slower pace. In my region of the Riviera Maya, things have picked up and its been booming for 5 years with tourists

The Intelligent Sea Turtles of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Dec 13th, 2009 by admin

By: Jim Scherrer

Sea turtles are very intelligent creatures of nature; they continue coming to Puerto Vallarta regardless of the swine flu scare, the border town drug wars, or the global recession! They don’t visit Vallarta for its perfect climate, its eight beautiful golf courses, its world class deep sea fishing, its hundreds of fine restaurants, nightclubs and discotheques, its magnificent sunsets, or the colorful tropical flora and fauna in the surrounding Sierra Madre hillsides; they visit Vallarta strictly for its 35 miles of sandy beaches. However, the fact that they love the beaches around PV is only a small clue as to what makes the sea turtles so incredibly intelligent.

Sea turtles constitute a single radiation that was distinct from all other turtles during the Late Cretaceous Period, the “age of dinosaurs”, at least 100 million years ago. It’s hard to imagine that approximately 65 million years ago during the Cretaceous?Tertiary Extinction Event (KT Mass Extinction), the planet endured catastrophic events such as massive asteroid impacts and/or tremendous volcanic activity resulting in significant climate changes affecting all of the Earth’s plant and animal life. Sea turtles were among the few species to survive these traumatic events and related climate changes.

Today, there are only seven living species of sea turtles worldwide and members of five or six of these species manage to visit Vallarta annually. Six of the seven species have hard shells and only one has a soft shell; it’s the leatherback turtle, the largest of them all and a periodic visitor to Vallarta. The leatherbacks grow for 30 years, from hatchlings weighing about an ounce, to maturity weighing up to 1,300 pounds and measuring up to 7 feet long and 5 feet wide; they can live to be more than 80 years old.

Although sea turtles representing most of the species visit Vallarta, the majority of them are of the Olive Ridley species. They are much smaller than the leatherbacks, measuring less than 3 feet long and weighing just a little over 100 pounds with dark olive green heart shaped domed shells.

The Olive Ridley turtles hatch from their eggs weighing less than an ounce, crawl out of their buried nest clawing their way up to the surface of the sand, and then head directly to the water to begin life with approximately 100 siblings at their side. They are quite fortunate if they ever make it to the water; if certain predators (including thoughtless humans) don’t get them while they are still in the shell, many other predators such as crabs and birds are anxiously awaiting their journey across the beach to the water’s edge. Of course, as soon as these tiny delicious morsels hit the water, any fish in the area immediately welcome them as dinner! Consequently, a very small percentage of these infant sea turtles ever make it out to the open sea.

Of the few fortunate sea turtles that do survive their entrance into this cruel world, growing to maturity, which will take more than 15 years, is a formidable task. If certain fish do not get them during their first year of life, fishermen with long lines or nets are apt to accidentally catch them at any time during their maturing process, let alone at any time during their adult life. With the odds of survival stacked so heavily against the sea turtles, they are now considered to be either a threatened or an endangered species; the Olive Ridleys along the Mexican Pacific coastline are classified as an endangered species by the fisheries division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Okay, now that we know a little about these prehistoric air breathing reptiles, what is it that makes them so incredibly intelligent? Well, first you have to give them credit for surviving throughout history while almost all other forms of life didn’t! Second, they were perhaps the first creatures to have global positioning systems (GPS)! Yes, 100 million years before we mere mortals invented the GPS, the sea turtles, with their high sensitivity to the Earth’s magnetic field, always knew where they were relative to where they were born. Just imagine, these prehistoric creatures are able to swim a couple thousand miles out to sea, enjoy life floating and swimming around in the open water for up to 80 years while never losing their bearings, and still remember exactly where they were born!

Because of their incredible ability to always know their own location, upon reaching maturity at the age of 15 years or older, the females that are ready to lay their eggs always return to the sandy beach where they were born. Consequently, for about five months every year, the beaches of Puerto Vallarta are home to hundreds of female sea turtles that come ashore to nest. These are the same females that hatched on the same beautiful beaches from 15 to 50 years ago! Thus, with a lot of luck, and today with much assistance, a new generation of sea turtles begins.

In certain areas along the Pacific coastline of Mexico, the Olive Ridley sea turtles invade the shore in “arribadas” of 100 or more at a time, however in Puerto Vallarta they are generally either alone or in very small groups scattered thinly over the beach. Because of their scarcity, their homecoming to the local beaches has become a significant tourist attraction for visitors to Vallarta. More importantly, today there is a small group of volunteer conservationists, the Western Ecological Society, in Vallarta that does everything possible to protect these endangered animals. This group was first organized in 1993 and since then has done everything possible to see that the eggs and hatchlings are protected from all predators, thus giving the next generation of sea turtles a much better chance of survival. Dec 13th, 2009 by admin

The Three Eyed Iguanas of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Dec 13th, 2009 by admin

By: Jim Scherrer

The word ?iguana? is the Spanish derivation of the Carib (Amerindian) word, ?iwana?; a name given to a family of lizards that are found throughout the Americas.

Iguanas are one of the five generally recognized infraorders of the lacertilian suborder of reptiles which includes all lizards. The Iguanidae family is only one of about 17 families of the lacertilian suborder; it includes the subfamilies of iguana iguanas (green) and spiny-tailed (black) iguanas which are abundant in the Puerto Vallarta, Mexico area. This entire order of reptiles has been traced back to Tianyusaurus who roamed the Earth during the Late Cretaceous Period, 65-100 million years ago.

Iguanas have been used as a food source in Central and South America for the past 7,000 years and are still used as a source of meat; often referred to as gallina de palo, “bamboo chicken” or “chicken of the tree,” because they are said to taste like chicken. Leather from the iguana hide has also been a prized material for centuries.

Although green iguanas are in peril, they are not considered an endangered species; they are considered to be a threatened species and today they are used mainly as pets with 800,000 imported to the U.S. in 1995 alone. Even though hunting, trapping, or killing iguanas is illegal throughout Mexico, they are nevertheless still sought after as pets. Aside from humans, iguanas have few natural predators; however hawks and owls will attack the smaller ones. Since iguanas are preyed upon by hawks, their fear of hawks is exploited by blowing a hawk’s whistle which makes the iguana freeze and become easier to capture in the wild. Iguanas have claws and powerful tails to fight off most all other land based predators and if caught, they have the ability to shed off a portion of their tail which will later grow back.

Iguanas are commonplace around the Puerto Vallarta area living mainly in trees but also often seen bathing in the sun while on the ground or on large rocks. The tropical climate and lush foliage in PV provide the ideal environment for these ancient reptiles (as well as for us ancient retirees!); a never ending year-round supply of food with an abundance of leaves, fruit, and flowers such as hibiscus and bougainvilleas. As we have witnessed at one of the eight local golf courses, they are pretty fast runners and excellent swimmers!

In Puerto Vallarta, iguanas are often used as company logos, in names of establishments such as restaurants, nightclubs, and cantinas, house names, fiesta names, etc., even in the name of a prestigious neighborhood: Isla Iguana, located in the Marina area. They are often the subject of large sand sculptures on the beach in front of the downtown malecon, molded into pottery items, incorporated into all types of paintings, and included in various other forms of art. Of course, it?s almost impossible to lay on the beach in PV without one of the local boys coming by with his four foot long pet iguana for a photo op! In fact, it was the iguana that put Puerto Vallarta on the international map in 1963 when John Huston filmed ?The Night of the Iguana?. Ever since then, the iguana (along with its relative, the gecko) has remained one Vallarta?s most recognized symbols.

Okay, you must be getting impatient wondering what the deal is regarding the three eyed iguanas of Puerto Vallarta; well, it just so happens that all iguanas have three eyes! The third eye, referred to as the parietal or pineal eye, is located on top of the iguana?s head. It is covered by a thin film of skin and therefore does not clearly see color or details but it does detect sun, shade, and movement of overhead predators.

These three eyed reptiles also have a large loose flap of skin under their chin called a dewlap. The dewlap can be moved in or out to show off during mating or warn attackers, but more importantly, it?s used to regulate the body temperature. It has many blood vessels running through its thin skin and therefore, on a hot day, the iguana can get in the shade and stick out its dewlap to let the body heat escape; on a cold day, it can bathe in the sun and stick out its dewlap to absorb as much of the sun rays as possible. With this handy little built-in heat exchanger, the iguana can enjoy the hot Mexican sun and never sweat!

Mexico Beachfront at Its Best – Puerto Vallarta Real Estate Offers Certified Clean Beaches
Dec 12th, 2009 by admin

If you are considering buying a luxury condo or a dream home on the Mexico BeachfrontPuerto Vallarta Real Estate provides one of the best options available.  Besides the luxurious condos or beautiful villas available with a fantastic view of the ocean and the Sierra Madre Mountains, we must remember one of the key reasons why we are choosing to buy real estate in Mexico; the beaches.  Puerto Vallarta’s beaches are among the best, and besides the natural beauty, the municipal and state governments are constantly making an effort not only to keep them clean and safe, to make sure that they meet the highest standards and continue to be among the best.  Recently this effort was recognized when the prestigious “Clean Beaches” certification was given to two of Puerto Vallarta’s beaches.

This certification ensures the cleanliness, safety and environmental protection of the the beaches,  with ongoing cleanliness and protection.  The certification increases the competitiveness of Puerto Vallarta real estate within the Mexico beachfront market.  So far only eight beaches have been certified in Mexico, and two of these are in Puerto Vallarta, making the Puerto Vallarta Real Estate region one of only five areas that have received this special distinction.

The two beaches are “Garza Blanca” and “Los Camarones,” and the city invested weeks of intensive work to comply with  the 60 conditions of the new program.  A large amount of work and dedication was required to obtain the certification.  While Puerto Vallarta’s beaches were already very clean, the certification has purposely been made very difficult to obtain – a fact which speaks even more for Puerto Vallarta’s accomplishment.  The effort will be on-going, in order to maintain the certification.  Besides this effort the city is also planning to improve signs, access for people with disabilities, implement educational measures and public awareness for care of the environment.

In Puerto Vallarta looks are not deceiving; the luxury you see is real, and the beautiful, clean beaches have been certified to be free of pollution and to meet the highest level of safety.  If you are considering buying beachfront, why not buy in a place that is guaranteed to have the best beaches around?

A Mexico Vacation Special To The Maroma Resort In The Mayan Riviera
Dec 12th, 2009 by admin

Some very good reasons for booking a Mexico vacation special and choosing the best of luxury hotels the Maroma Resort in the Mayan Riviera

Many people are looking for a Mexico Vacation Special but the brochures have too many choices, so before making any decision you need to check out the Maroma Resort on the Mayan Riviera Mexico

You first realize that the Maroma Resort in the Mayan Riviera in Mexico is an absolutely top class Mexico Vacation Special is when you finish a short but quite worrying five minute ride through thick jungle on an unpaved road, once you leave the main tarmac road.

You really wonder quite what you will find at the end of the track, when you suddenly emerge into a courtyard that instantly reminds you of a Mexican hacienda, with white walls, and glimpses of thatched turrets. If you arrive in the dark, the floodlit courtyard is truly stunning, and the personal greeting by name further reinforces that this is somewhere special.

You see the sun shining off the pool, and are suddenly aware of a group of what you assume to be staff members awaiting your arrival, and it is only then that you realize they are staff members, and that this is the Maroma Resort probably one of the absolutely best hotels on the Mayan Riviera.

Maroma Hotel is really special, as is already obvious it is a real Caribbean hideaway, and it is difficult to believe that this hidden gem is located along 25 acres of beachfront on a 500 acre Mayan Riviera coconut plantation. The maroma resort and Spa is totally luxurious and built in the style of the old Mexican haciendas.

One of the most obvious things about the Maroma Resort is the level of service which makes it stand out on a coast that isn’t short of hotels, but it can genuinely say it is a luxury hotel, and after one visit it is obvious why it is possibly the best choice for a Mexico Vacation Special. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

When you check in, the staff will endeavor to discover your likes, dislikes and any special requirements, then you will be whisked to your room. There are only 65 rooms and a four bedroom villa, which just about qualifies the Maroma resort as a boutique luxury hotel.

The rooms all feature locally sourced materials, hand painted Mexican floor tiles, mahogany cabinets, beds are enveloped in soft white netting, and the effect is spectacular. Whilst there are televisions, they are only on request, and they only play DVD’s, so it is great to escape from the real world whilst on your Mexican Vacation Special.

Room service is superb, and the day will begin with steaming pots of coffee delivered to the room at the time you have requested, and the room service breakfast is quite exceptional.

When it comes to facilities, if Spas are the thing to complete your vacation, then the huge spa is worth the trip alone. Ancient Mayan Healing underpins many of the treatments.

As you can imagine, the Maroma Hotel and Spa on the Mayan Riviera isn’t cheap, but it is well worth the cost. You are only an hour or so away from the ancient Mayan site of Tulum, and Chichen Itza probably the best known site is around three hours drive. Another feature that is important is that there is very limited access for children less than sixteen years old.

Maroma has to be amongst the best hotels anywhere. It has an understated elegance, so if you want a Mexican vacation Special, then you couldn’t choose better.
